DNS, text utilities and bibliography API

These recovered prototype capabilities are now public, free beta APIs. Anonymous trials require no account or wallet; an optional API key provides an individual monthly quota. All endpoints share the same usage budget as the DOI API. Data you submit for DNS or bibliography lookup is sent to the named providers.

DNS snapshot

GET https://agentutility.network/api/dns?domain=example.com

Provide a public domain name, without a protocol, path, credentials or IP address. Returns domain, delivery_status, five queries (A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT), provider attempts, provenance and limitations. Each query distinguishes answered, no_data, nxdomain and provider_error. Cloudflare is tried first; Google Public DNS is used only on provider errors, not on no-data or NXDOMAIN. Each provider attempt has a four-second timeout and 256 KB response limit. Responses cap each answer list at 100 with a truncation flag.

A snapshot consumes five shared budget tokens, makes at most ten resolver requests and does not visit the domain's website. DNS records do not prove identity, domain ownership, website safety, mail deliverability or purchase availability. Partial snapshots return HTTP 200 with delivery_status: partial; total provider failure returns 502.

Deterministic utilities

POST https://agentutility.network/api/tools
Content-Type: application/json

{"tool":"json-validate","input":"{\"answer\":42}"}

Supported tool names: json-validate returns valid, formatted, top_level_type and keys; content-hash returns algorithm, sha256 and utf8_bytes; text-inspect returns words, characters, lines, utf8_bytes and word_count_method. Invalid JSON inside the input string returns HTTP 200 with valid: false; a malformed request envelope returns 422. JSON validation checks syntax, not a business schema. Hashes prove byte consistency, not authenticity. Words are split on whitespace; characters count Unicode code points, not graphemes.

POST envelopes are limited to 32 KB UTF-8. JSON input is additionally limited to 20,000 characters; other tool input limits still apply. These utilities run on the backend and do not send their text to an external provider. Never submit secrets or personal data unnecessarily.

Bibliographic consistency audit

POST https://agentutility.network/api/bibliography
Content-Type: application/json

{"citations":[{"doi":"10.1038/nphys1170","expected_title":"Measured measurement"}]}

Submit 1–5 citations. Each requires a doi (up to 250 characters) and optional expected_title (up to 1,000 characters). Results include per-citation metadata, status and summary. Status is resolved, title_mismatch, invalid_doi, not_found_in_crossref or provider_error. Title comparison uses Jaccard similarity of normalized letter/number tokens; a score below 0.8 is a review warning. This does not assess truth, scientific validity, authenticity or complete retraction status.

Lookups execute sequentially. A ten-second scheduling budget stops additional provider calls; an in-flight Crossref request can take up to eight seconds, so the total may approach eighteen seconds. The audit consumes one shared token per submitted citation, including invalid entries. Provider failures are reported per citation and make delivery_status partial. Complete means processing finished, not that every DOI resolved.

Shared limits and errors

The single backend allows a burst of ten budget tokens, refilling one per second, with at most five concurrent operations across endpoints. DNS costs five tokens; bibliography costs one per citation; a utility or DOI request costs one. Some rejected requests still consume a token. HTTP 429 includes Retry-After. Optional API keys have an individual monthly quota, as documented below. The direct endpoints provide no SLA or persistent receipt. The separate agent flow provides input-bound quotes, idempotent free orders and short-lived receipts. These public routes replace neither the old sandbox order API nor its development MCP interface.

405: wrong method; 413: request too large; 415: JSON content type required; 422: invalid input; 502/503: provider failure. Keep inputs encoded, handle partial results, and retry conservatively.

Free beta quotas

Anonymous requests share 100 units per UTC day across all anonymous callers; this is not a per-person allowance. Free beta API keys receive 1,000 units per UTC calendar month. A service-wide safety ceiling of 10,000 units per UTC month also applies, so a key is not an availability reservation. Quotas persist across restarts.

One DOI lookup or deterministic tool request costs one unit; a DNS snapshot costs five; a bibliography audit costs one per submitted citation. Admitted requests consume units even if validation or the provider later fails. Quota rejections do not consume units. The short-term shared rate and concurrency limits also apply. More volume is not currently purchasable: no paid plan or checkout is active.

API keys

Keys can now be obtained automatically with signed Ed25519 enrollment. Use scoped delegation for an executing agent; follow the automatic agent flow. Manual operator issuance remains available as an administrative fallback. Send your key only to AUN over HTTPS in an Authorization header, never a URL. An invalid or revoked key returns 401 instead of falling back to the anonymous pool. API keys do not bypass limits.

Authorization: Bearer YOUR_AUN_API_KEY

Check usage

GET https://agentutility.network/api/usage
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_AUN_API_KEY

Omit the header to inspect the shared anonymous budget. The response includes limit, used, remaining, reset_at, global_remaining and global_reset_at. Usage checks do not consume quota. HTTP 429 with code quota_exhausted includes reset_at and Retry-After. Respect that reset; rapid retries will not increase your allowance.

The free beta runs until 20 April 2027 subject to these limits. Any future paid plans will be announced in advance; there are no automatic charges or automatic paid conversions. Prices and paid launch dates are not established.
